Dog Breeds
Dog breeds emerged from mans gradual domestication of the wolf. Humans realised that wolfs with particular traits if crossed would produce offspring that would be useful to humans began to breed wolfs with certain characteristics. Whether they were looking for speed, intelligence this breeding allied to natural evolution gradually, over a long period of time saw breeds of dogs emerge that were ditinctly different from their forefathers.
Essentially dogs were bred for specific purposes whether it was for herding, protecting the homestead, transporting, there were a multitude of tasks that diferent dog breeds could perform for man. Along the way an inter-dependance and companionship evolved between man and dog. Although many of the tasks which certain dogs were bred for are no longer necessary it in no way diminishes our affection and apprecaition of these wonderful animals. The companionship offered in a human and dog relationship is, even without the practical aspect, stronger than ever.
